Carbonera is a remote fishing village located about 100 miles south of the Brownsville, Texas, border in Tamaulipas, Mexico. Tamaulipas is the poorest state in Mexico. The families of Carbonera live typically on about $10 a day working as local fishermen. Most live in extremely poor housing, many in tar paper shacks, with no running water or electricity. We have built homes for 20 families in the village.
This is a typical "good" home in Carbonera. Many are not as good as this one.
The village is located on the Gulf and has frequent heavy winds and rains. These homes leak easily and deteriorate quickly.
We have built homes using materials and hurricanes straps to withstand the Gulf weather. We also add indoor plumbing and a toilet.
