Since 2007, Builders Without Borders of Texas, Inc., has partnered with Dr. Greg Clariday and Gateway Church of Clear Lake, Texas, in providing a free medical clinic in San Fernando, Mexico. Twice a year, Dr. Clariday, a few of his staff members, and a team of volunteers carry out a three-day clinic. Hundreds of patients are screened and receive eye glasses. At each clinic, between 30 and 75 patients receive cataract surgery. Many of these patients are blind before surgery and following surgery, their sight is restored. This would not be possible without this clinic.

Cataracts are a huge problem for the less fortunate people of Mexico. Diabetes is rampant in the culture due to poor diet and lack of education about nutrition, as well as the resources to maintain a healthy diet. The diabetes problem along with other factors such as the fishermen of places like Carbonera spending their lives fishing in the open Gulf in the glaring sun with no sunglasses contribute to the cataracts.
BWBT hopes to expand the eye clinic into an ongoing screening clinic for diabetes and heart disease and a health education program that includes nutrition classes and a gardening center.
